Artificial intelligence can be part of a machine vision solution, but using it is not automatically necessary. Instead of starting with the technology, it is worth starting with the objective: what needs to be determined from the image, and how far should that information be used? When designing a machine vision solution, AI may seem…
Introducing machine vision to production may feel like a major investment, but there is no need to start with a complete, production-ready system. A pilot project makes it possible to focus on a single application and test how well machine vision can solve the problem in practice. At the same time, the pilot provides valuable…
Production anomalies do not appear only as alarms or production line stoppages. Variations in quality, changes in material behavior, or process disturbances may develop gradually and go unnoticed for a long time. The earlier these changes are detected, the easier it is to limit their impact and address their root causes. With machine vision, production…
For birdwatchers, fast and reliable information is an essential part of the hobby. When a rare bird is spotted, the information is expected to be shared with others immediately and as accurately as possible. The association’s rules may even make reporting an observation an obligation. Lintutiedotus (Bird Alerts) is a mobile application designed for birdwatchers…
In plywood manufacturing, every veneer sheet forms part of a larger whole where quality is essential. One of the most critical process stages is the scarf joint, where the ends of veneer sheets are bevel-cut and joined together to create a continuous and sufficiently long veneer for further processing. The quality of the scarf joint…
A single board processed in the wrong orientation can compromise the outcome of an entire production run. Santa Margarita’s SapWood board turning control, based on machine vision, ensures that each board is correctly oriented – automatically and in line with production requirements. In the mechanical forest industry, including sawmills and downstream processing, automation and machine…
Plywood production typically begins with veneer peeling. Even at this early stage, an average of about two percent of the birch raw material is lost due to peeling defects, and occasionally, the material loss can rise significantly higher. To reduce these losses caused by peeling defects, the VeneerProfiler system has been developed. The system monitors…
